Competition for Two Research Positions

The Dean of the Faculty of Polish Studies at the University of Warsaw announces a competition for two positions of research assistant for a definite period of time in the Institute of Polish Literature at the Laboratory for the Poetics of Verse within the project “Litanic Verse in the Culture of European Regions”.

 

Terms and conditions of the competition

The competition is open to candidates who hold a doctoral degree in the humanities in the fields of literary studies, cultural studies or linguistics. In  the case of the candidates who have been educated abroad, the profile R2 (Recognised Researcher), as described on the website Euraxess of the European Commission, is acknowledged as an equivalent of the doctoral degree.

The competition is also open to doctoral students who plan to receive a doctoral degree in the humanities in the fields of literary studies, cultural studies or linguistics, on condition that they have already finished and submitted their doctoral dissertations, and in their doctoral procedures a resolution appointing the reviewers has already been passed. In the case of the candidates who study abroad, the profile R1 (First Stage Researcher), as presented on the website Euraxess of the European Commission, is acknowledged as a description of a doctoral student.

The competition is not open to scholars who hold a habilitation degree or an academic title of professor, nor to the scholars whose achievements correspond to the profiles R3 (Established Researcher) or R4 (Leading Researcher), as described on the website Euraxess of the European Commission.

The competition is not open to the employees of the University of Warsaw.

Requirements for the candidates

― European Union citizenship;

― academic achievements including publications written in Polish and/or English language in at least one discipline which is essential for the research questions of the project; disciplines essential for the project are: poetics (especially history or theory of verse, as well as history or theory of literary genres) and history of European literature (in particular the history of poetry from the Middle Ages to 1945); the disciplines of secondary importance which might also be taken into account are: history of Christian liturgy (especially ancient and medieval), history of European music (especially medieval liturgical music) and history of European folk culture up to the 19th century;

― linguistic skills that allow to study the poetry of at least one European country which has played an essential role in the history of litanic verse.
Candidates should submit*:

1. Application letter addressed to the Rector of the University of Warsaw;
2. Personal questionnaire**;
3. Curriculum vitae including information about education, academic career, as well as academic, teaching and organisational achievements;
4. Documents confirming the education, which might be:

a) in the case of the candidates holding a doctoral degree, one of the three documents:

― a certified copy of the diploma of doctoral degree in the humanities, in the field of literary studies, cultural studies or linguistics,

― a letter from the academic institution in which the doctoral defence took place confirming that the doctoral degree in the humanities in the field of literary studies, cultural studies or linguistics has been conferred,

― a document that proves that the candidate has received a PhD degree, on the basis of a dissertation in literary studies, cultural studies or linguistics;

b) in the case of the candidates who have finished writing their doctoral dissertations: a letter from the appropriate academic institution confirming that in the doctoral procedure leading to the doctoral degree in the humanities, in the field of literary studies, cultural studies or linguistics, the candidate’s dissertation has been accepted by the supervisor and the council of the institution has passed a resolution appointing the reviewers of the dissertation;
5. Documents or publications that prove the linguistic skills of the candidate;
6. Declaration of the scope of participation in the project**;
7. List of the candidate’s publications from the last five years;
8. Selected publications that are representative of the candidate’s work, published in the last 5 years, altogether consisting of 40,000 up to 120,000 characters, out of which at least 40,000 characters belong to the texts written in Polish or English***.
*) The documents should be submitted either in Polish or in English.
**) The forms of the Personal questionnaire and of the Declaration of the scope of participation in the project should be downloaded from the website of the project www.wiersz.uw.edu.pl.
***) Either an original publication or its copy may be submitted. In the case of the copy one should also submit a copy of the pages that include bibliographical information. Academic achievements may also comprise of unpublished fragments of doctoral dissertation. All texts accepted for publication should be accompanied by a letter from the publisher.

The competition will be adjudicated by the Competition Committee in accordance with the Regulations of the Faculty of Polish Studies, University of Warsaw and the Detailed terms of the competition.

 

Competition procedure consists of two stages: the evaluation of the candidates’ academic, teaching and organisational achievements (on the basis of the documents submitted) and the interview. The list of the candidates qualified for the second stage of the competition and the date of the interview will be announced on 17 December 2013. Interviews with the candidates from abroad might be conducted either in Polish or in English.

 

Two persons selected in the competition will be employed on the basis of a full-time contract of employment. The maximal length of the time of employment is 54 months, divided into two periods. The first contract will be signed for 30 months from 1 March 2014 onwards. The second contract, for the next 24 months, will be signed with the same person without another competition procedure, on condition that the research tasks mentioned in the first contract have been conducted and the National Science Centre decides to financially support the second stage of the realisation of the project.

 

The competition will be adjudicated

until 31 January 2014.
