This publication is centered upon the origin of litanic verse and the roots of its specific rhythmic form, genre structure and rhetorical figures, as well as the space-time matrix within which the litanic world is depicted. Theoretical considerations are accompanied by examples of poetic works, composed by representatives of different European nations and in various European languages, but the analysis focuses especially on those in English, French, Latin, and Italian. The monograph traces the emergence of the poetic litany to the middle of the nineteenth century.
